The overall vision of the project is to create a vibrant communal environment for the new residents of Espergærde. Inspiration has been taken from two housing typologies, townhouses and shared accommodation, this combination resulting in a scheme which offers private space, alongside generous communal areas that aim to encourage interaction between residents, and in turn a create flourishing community. The scheme will provide a refreshing alternative to first time buyers who enjoy a large amount of social contact.
The masterplan is formed of a number of housing units that have been arranged to provide separation between arrival and recreational areas, allowing the shared communal space to remain partially secluded. The informal expression of the development has been arranged by creating shifted variations in each building plan.
All residents have a private garden that opens up directly onto the green recreational areas, shaped as a soft grass area with raised planting beds and trees. The houses divide the common areas into three zones that contain a play area, a common barbecue area and a rainwater harvesting basin. The communal spaces will function as a venue for all residents, which will grow into a dynamic social space that offers a positive alternative to the urbanization of classical suburbs.
